Big Relief from Tehran: After 7 Years, Iranian Crude Arrives in India Amid Rising Gulf Tensions (X)

New Delhi: Amidst the US-Israel-Iran tension, an important development has emerged for India on the energy front. The shipment of Iranian crude oil has finally arrived in India after almost seven years. Under the temporary relaxation given in US sanctions, two big tankers have reached the east and west coast of the country carrying about 4 million barrels of oil. This development has happened at a time when US-Iran talks have failed and tension in the region is continuously increasing.

Has India again ordered Iranian oil after seven years?

After US sanctions in 2019, India completely stopped importing oil from Iran. Now, after getting the temporary exemption, for the first time such a large consignment has reached India, which is considered important from the energy market.

From which tankers did this consignment come?

According to the information, a tanker named 'Felicity' has reached Sikka coast of Gujarat, while another ship named 'Jaya' is standing near Paradip coast of Odisha. Both have approximately 20 lakh barrels of crude oil loaded each.

Did America's exemption make this supply possible?

The US recently granted a limited 30-day exemption, allowing the sale of Iranian oil already in transit. Taking advantage of this discount, this consignment has reached India.

Are Indian companies buyers of this oil?

Paradip Port is mainly associated with Indian Oil Corporation, while Sikka Port is an important hub for Reliance Industries and BPCL. However, the buyers have not yet confirmed the deal.

Did India buy large quantities of oil from Iran earlier, too?

Before the sanctions, India was a big customer of Iran. In 2018, India imported more than 5 lakh barrels of oil daily, which was a significant part of the total imports.

Will the current global tensions have an impact on these figures?

After the failure of US-Iran talks and the warning of a possible blockade, it is clear that it may be difficult to continue this supply for a long time. Due to this there is uncertainty in the global market.

Can India get Iranian oil in future also?

Experts believe that the outcome will completely depend on America's policy and regional situation. The future situation will be clear after the grace period is over.

Will this affect India's energy security?

In the short term, the outcome is a relief for India, because it diversifies the supply. However, the situation remains uncertain in the long term.
